LOW CULTURE – S/T 7″ OUT NOW!

In late 2011, when it was clear that Shang-A-Lang was ending because Andy was moving to Idaho and Total Jock (a short lived hardcore project) was over done because James made a quick decision to move to Albuquerque, I asked Cade and Sam (of Total Jock) if they wanted to start a new band.  We practiced a few times as a three-piece and recorded a 4-song demo.  A few weeks later Joe (Marked Men/Shang-A-Lang) announced that he was moving back to Las Cruces. The first day he was back, we went for beers before practice and I asked if he wanted to join the band. We showed up unannounced, Joe plugged in, learned some songs, and then I asked Cade and Sam if he could join the band. That’s kind of backwards I know, but it worked out. Low Culture’s first show in early November 2011 was at Shang-A-Lang’s last show. Circle of life…

Low Culture plays catchy garage punk that while not far removed from half of the band’s previous project, Shang-A-Lang, has a lot less emphasis on riffs and blown out recordings, and more emphasis on melody and crisp (while not necessarily “over-produced”) recordings. 4-songs, no download code but you can download it for pay what you will on any of the label’s Bandcamp sites. Split release with Dead Broke, Rad Girlfriend, and Drunken Sailor (UK).

The band will be doing a North-east and Canadian tour with Iron Chic in June. Here are the dates:

June 9th @ E. Setauket VFW (Long Island, NY) w/ Iron Chic, Sister Kisser, Fellow Project

God Equals Genocide – Rattled Minds Lp

God Equals Genocide, in my mind, has been one of the most energetic and fun (while still writting great socially concious lyrics) in recent years by my estimation. Something like 5 years ago, while drunk and on tour with them, I spent an entire evening trying to convince them to write and record a full length, to which they said “probably not.” Fast forward 4 and a half years, and Daryl from the band emails me saying that they spent the night in a studio and recorded 10 songs for a record that I was gonna put out. I was stoked, but even more so after I was sent the tracks. This record really sees the band stepping it up with their own brand of sloppy thrashy poppy punk. The record will include two secret tracks from the bands alter ego that’s not included in the stream below. These will go on sale tomorrow. First 50 (mailorder only) will be on pink vinyl.

Low Culture – S/T 7″ coming soon/stream now!

We’ve got the first Low Culture 7″ streaming on the Dirt Cult Bandcamp page. This will be out in early May on Dirt Cult/Dead Broke/Rad Girlfriend/Drunken Sailor Records. Low Culture is a new pop/garage/punk band from members of Shang-A-Lang, Marked Men, Gypsy, etc. We’ll be touring with Iron Chic on the east coast and Canada in June. Dates are on the show page (venue infor TBA). Check the stream here:

Also, God Equals Genocide – Rattled Minds LP should be out by the end of the month. Amazing “slop punk” from Los Angeles, CA! Seriously, I’ve been a fan of this band for years, and have put out several records, but this time around GEG has really stepped up their game. I can’t wait for you to hear it! Crass meeets the Bananas!

Other big news: We’re opening a actual store in the Trainyard (our show/practice space) very soon! The store will be open at kind of odd hours – whenever we feel like it/during shows, but most of the stock will be available in our distro. So keep an eye out for that!

THE MAGNIFICENT – BAD LUCKY LP OUT NOW!

The Magnificent are a punk rock trio from West Yorkshire, England. I think they sound like Billy Bragg, Smalltown, Ringers, The Clash, and so on. When I heard these recordings I jumped at the opportunity to put this out. I’ve played them countless times since then and am extremely excited for this record is finally available!
From the band: “There is a lot of global unrest at the moment, and people of our generation don’t know what to do with their lives. This album is about how a generation struggles to emulate the feats of their parents, ‘the baby boomers’. Everyone is poor these days and everyone struggles to meet the cost of living. The album is about being born into a world ruled by economics that no-one truly understands or has control of. ”

Tracklist
1. 1981
2. Foreign Legion
3. Song For Lauren
4. Working Men’s Club (Part 3)
5. Hold My Drink Up High
6. BBQ & Grasshoppers
7. Longshot
8. Buy More Crap
9. Walk A Mile In My Jeans
10. King Of The Denim Jackets

Jimmy Islip: Vocals / Bass Guitar
Matt Colmer: Vocals / Guitar
Charlie Batten: Drums

Available in the UK from Drunken Sailor
Available in Japan from Eager Beaver
Available on CD from Just Say No To Government Music

Shipping Increases

So I’ve held this off for as long as I can, but Dirt Cult can no longer sustain the $3/$10/$10 flat rate shipping prices we’ve sustained for the past several years. We’ve weathered several USPS price hikes and have pretty much eaten the cost of mailers, tape, and other supplies, but Dirt Cult is growing and this means I’ve got to be a bit more practical…stop giving so much shit way for free (even if it is just a cardboard mailer and a few bucks on shipping)…it’s the only way continuing to put out records is going to make sense moving forward. Because, let’s face it, I don’t make a dime from this venture, but its nice that it’s finally starting to sustain itself!  Hope you all understand.

Here is the new price structure, still flat rate, still pretty goddamn cheap…order a more stuff and you’ll still come out on top!

US: $4
CAN/MEX: $10
INTERNATIONAL: $16

More news on upcoming releases coming soon, but hey! there are a lot of them, and any support (in the form of orders) would be awesome!

Shang-A-Lang – Waiting for the End 7″

I suppose somewhat appropriately Shang-A-Lang’s last record of new material, titled”Waiting for the End” will be released on the first week of what many consider the last year of human existance. Shang-A-Lang has been an incredibly prolific band over the past few years, having done countless splits (really, I can’t count them), several 7 inches, an LP/CD, and a Collections LP. The release is between 7 labels that have helped the band out in various ways over the past several years: Dirt Cult, Fast Crowd, Silver Sprocket, Dead Broke, Let’s Pretend, No Breaks, and Drunken Sailor (UK). Each label will have 118 copies. These five songs are probably the best SAL material to date, which makes the break-up even more bittersweet. Featuring the amazing artwork by Mich Clem and Nation of Amanda!

Fur Coats – Don’t Make Me Beg 7″ out now!

It’s an Xmas micacle! Ok, not really, but I’m fucking excited that this record is finally out! This is the debut from Chicago powerhouse, Fur Coats, featuring members of Das Kapital, Direct Hit!, No Empathy, The Traitors, etc. I got sent these songs, immediately fell in love, and screamed “I’ll do it!” These songs carry on the great tradition of melodic Chicago punk, and the hooks will get stuck in your head for days. Don’t believe me? Stream the record here: http://thefurcoats.bandcamp.com/

Limited to 300 on black vinyl!

 Shang-A-Lang – Waiting for the End 7”
Final and dare I say best 7” from this prolific Las Cruces punk bands. Let’s see if I can get this right: After 8 split 7 inches, 2 7 singles, on full length, a collection LP/CD, and several songs on various comps, Shang-A-Lang has decided to call it quits, but not before recording their final batch of songs. This is a split release with Dead Broke, No Breaks, Drunken Sailor, Fast Crowd, Silver Sprocket, and Let’s Pretend. Amazing art by Mitch Clem and Nation of Amanda. Limited to 1000.

AND SOME SORTA DIRT CULT RELATED NEWS!
Also for those of you interested, I’ve taken over US distribution of Drunken Sailor Records (UK). What a great label!
